SMB Tax Preparer

Please note: We are not currently accepting applications from candidates residing in CA, NY, CO, or IL.

Schedule: ~30 hours/week (set weekly schedule) with optional extra hours during peak season
Location: Remote (company equipment provided)
Team: Fully remote, based out of central WI

What You’ll Do

  • Prepare returns: 1040s (including Schedules C & E), 1065, 1120, 1120S, and occasional 990s in TaxAct

  • Review & reconcile: Assess client paperwork, identify gaps, and request missing information

  • Document rigor: Work fully paperless, name/file correctly by client/year, and keep notes complete

  • Workflow tracking: Update statuses and tasks in Podio; keep deadlines visible and current

  • Client communication: Meet/advice as needed; capture notes and follow-ups in the system

  • Tax notices & planning: Draft responses to tax authorities and support implementation of planning items

  • Team engagement: Join weekly/monthly meetings prepared; collaborate with operations and tax teammates

What You Bring:

Must-haves

  • 3+ years preparing 1040 (C/E), 1065, 1120 & 1120S or current EA

  • 3+ years professional paperless experience using a project management system

  • Strong written/verbal communication and a high personal sense of urgency

  • Consistent accuracy and attention to detail; follows established processes

  • Ability to work a set part-time schedule and attend Mon & Thu 9:00–10:30am CST meetings

  • Dedicated, private workspace for confidential work

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a small-firm or multi-client environment

  • Comfortable translating tax results into plain English for small business owners

  • Responsive: Internal replies within 24 hours (Mon–Thu); client replies within 48 hours with next steps

  • Status stays fresh: Boards updated same day; nothing sits stale >24 hours

  • Accuracy first: Quality checks before submission; clean naming and proper year foldering

  • Proactive: We flag risks early and suggest practical fixes

  • $26–$30/hour
